The Advanced Practice 2 – Sight Testing Program is produced by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), is endorsed by the Opticians Association of Canada (OAC) and is partially administered by the Opticians of Manitoba (OOM). It is a one-year online independent study program, where a student will explore the art and science of the refraction, including phorometry, strabismus, and muscle imbalances. Emphasis will be placed on the objective refraction, orthoptics and subjective refraction. The program consists of both an online theoretical portion and a practical portion. The theoretical portion of the course contains a course of study governed by prescribed textbooks and online course material. Students must complete online chapter post tests, written seminar quizzes and written midterm and final examinations. The practical portion requires that the student complete the required practical hours under the direct supervision of a practising MD, OD, COMT or Refracting Optician or by attending scheduled lab workshops.
