"OUR focus is YOUR eyesight"
Manitoba’s Accessibility Legislation
Event Date: December 03, 2018

On behalf of Yutta Fricke, Executive Director

Disabilities Issues Office

On October 11, 2018, the Disabilities Issues Office shared a Government of Manitoba Media Bulletin with the Opticians of Manitoba notifying you that the Accessibility Standard for Customer Service comes into effect for the private sector on November 1, 2018.

As Executive Director of the Disabilities Issues Office, I am writing to inform you that our staff would be pleased to answer any questions you may have regarding how the legislation affects opticians with their own business.  Opticians employed by private or public sector organizations must comply with the customer service standard policies of their employer.

I am also pleased to share some specific tools that were developed to help employers comply with Manitoba’s accessibility legislation:

  • To learn about the responsibilities of employers under the Accessibility Standard for Customer Service and how to develop accessibility policies, practices and measures, please see the Employers’ Handbook.
  • The Sample Accessible Customer Service Policy will assist you in developing or reviewing your policies to promote accessibility of your goods and services.
  • Not sure if you are in full compliance with the Accessibility Standard for Customer Service?  We now offer a compliance checklist to help you determine what still needs to be done.
  • Finally, for questions still unanswered, please see the list of FAQ’s.

You may also wish to seek examples from organizations in Ontario that are affected by similar accessibility laws, including the College of Opticians of Ontario.

To access other resources or to register for a free workshop where you and your members can learn more about the new standard, please visit www.AccessibilityMB.ca.  New on-line staff training will be available in the very near future, so be sure to check this site often, or subscribe to Accessibility News to receive updates every two months directly to your in-box.

I encourage you to share this information and the tools with your members.  If you have any questions, or would like more information, the DIO can be reached by email at dio@gov.mb.ca or by calling 204-945-7613 or toll-free at 1-800-282-8069 (ext. 7613).
