Step 2: Exam

National Exam

Complete this step if your Decision letter (Step 1: PLAR) states that you are eligible to write the national exam.

There are two national exams in Manitoba:

  • Optical Sciences 1. Eyeglass Exam (for Opticians)
  • Optical Sciences 2: Advanced Practice Contact Lens Exam (for Contact Lens Opticians)

To become an Optician, you must write the Eyeglass Exam. To become a Contact Lens Optician, you must write both the Eyeglass Exam and the Advanced Practice Contact Lens Exam.

Contact OOM to arrange to write the exam(s).

  • Exams can usually be written in Manitoba in June. You may also write the exam in another Canadian province or territory at another time.
  • It costs $725 to write one exam. It costs $1450 to write both exams. (2019)

The exams are administered by the National Accreditation Committee of Optician Regulators (NACOR). Visit nacor.ca for exam dates throughout Canada.

IMPORTANT
If your Decision letter stated that you must complete a bridging program or course(s) or an Opticianry education program, you must provide OOM with the original certificate to prove that you have successfully completed the required course(s) or program. You must provide the original certificate in order to become eligible to write the national exam(s).
